ok, so science and religion aren’t always friends

I just read a fascinating (if a bit slanted) LA Times article about “genetic evidence that Native Americans aren’t descendants of the Hebrews”:http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-mormon16feb16,0,5561316.story. It probably doesn’t come as a shock to most of us, but apparently it’s a big deal to Mormons who were converted to that faith based on their “Lamanite heritage”. Anyway, I’m not doing the article justice. Read it; it has an interesting set of twists and turns.

  1. Oh, but it doesn’t really matter, does it? One can more easily distrust research the sole purpose of which is to discount your faith. When the other major fact in your factual account is that Jesus visited North America (remember the t-shirts? Oh, wait, no, cotton fabric would have rotten in the 2,000 years since then, oh well), there’s a pretty firm bet that scientific research is not going to make a huge dent. I’m just guessing, however.
