I just finished Chapter 3, and my main characters have finally had a chance to catch their breath. The space monkeys are no longer chasing them, so they got to introduce themselves a bit and get through some exposition. Writing that was pretty easy, I just chugged along filling their mouths with dialogue.
And if you believe that, I have some space monkeys I’d like you to meet.
Seriously, writing on Sunday was much harder than writing during the week, for both K and myself. Weekdays are for work, and Sunday is for rest, right? So we rested, and rested, and rested right up until midnight, telling ourselves the whole time that we’d get busy later. To top it off, I downed half of pint of something with way too much chocolate in it, and proceeded to stay up another hour writing the chapter opener I should have done hours before.
As a result, I didn’t get credit for a single word on Sunday, although my numbers are a bit inflated for today. Technically I wrote all of Chapter 3 in a single day, but really it felt more like a week. Writing exposition drags, and it drags even more when I’m following up on lots of running around and shouting. It was really hard to spice it up; at one point I even wrote whole paragraphs about the main character eating cereal. (I swear I’m not making this up.) The only peril I could actually muster was a shocking revelation that yes, they’re still after us, even though we’ve been loping along and chatting and eating cereal for five whole pages.
Here’s hoping the next chapter is a bit more exciting. I’m thinking about introducing some dialogue about the wonders of electric current.
Yay! Go, space monkeys, go!!
Thanks, Deb! I think that’s some kind of record for quickest comment.
