It is official, Kayla won the contest and the title of NASA’s Greatest Fan! Thank you for all your votes. We don’t have all the details yet, but we’re off to (hopefully) see the shuttle launch!

Since I am not a US citizen, I couldn’t enter a contest to win the title of ‘NASA’s greatest fan’ but my friend Kayla did, and she made it to the finals. The prize – a trip for two (her and I) to Florida to watch the space shuttle launch! You all know it’s my life-long dream to see a launch, so make it a reality and vote! Vote lots – the more votes the merrier, and there is no limit!

The site is a bit wonky to navigate, but you can watch any of the videos and then click “Vote for your favorite” to go to the voting ‘survey’. ‘Mars Mates Forever’ is the one with the photo of two flight-suit-clad adventurers looking defiantly skyward. It seems to allow you to vote as many times as you wish, so click it a couple dozen times for good measure.

I know, I know, but this video, Solo: The Movie, is extremely entertaining. It’s a preview for the Star Wars trilogy if it took place in contemporary Los Angeles. With an all-human cast. It’s funny.

Han, You Ladies’ Man…

I just found some original footage from Star Wars. It’s in black and white, and the sound quality is cruddy, but it’s worth it to see Han’s girlfriend (or whomever she is) and to hear Greedo chatting with Han in an English accent. And yes, Han did shoot first.

Strathairn in program for “Challenger”

David Strathairn, who received an Oscar nomination this year for his portrayal of newsman Edward R. Murrow in “Good Night, and Good Luck,” will play Richard Feynman. The noted physicist, whose probe was motivated in part by his participation in the Manhattan Project, sought to ensure that there was no institutional cover-up of the negligence that led to the Challenger tragedy.

a prairie home… movie?

OK, here’s the pitch: take a popular Midwestern radio show, add a few big Hollywood stars, throw in edgy director Robert Altman, and what do you have? “Pure screen gold”:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0420087/. Or something.

Yeah, they lost me at “radio show” too. I can see the appeal of Garrison Keillor, consummate storyteller, but the rest of it sounds like an odd fit. Of course, it’s been well-received at the Berlin Film Festival, so I may end up seeing it (and loving it) when it comes to town.
