I just stumbled across an odd little op-ed about a dinner that Bill Gates held for the president of China. The event itself wasn’t nearly as interesting as the author’s interpretation of it from a Chinese culinary (and gusto-political) standpoint:
…To us Chinese, eating is not just about filling up the stomach. It is an art that we love to overindulge ourselves with. It may be the only art form that remains legal and yet savoured by people across every social stratum.
The main reason we would overdo all these things is because we live in scarcity or constant fear of it. When one barely has enough to eat, he makes sure that once a year he can eat like there’s no tomorrow.
There’s a reverse correlation between abundance of food and conspicuous consumption of food…
Sigh.
United States is no help to Iraqi women
A new poll of leaders of Iraqi women’s-rights groups finds that women were treated better and their civil rights were more secure under deposed President Saddam Hussein than under the faltering and increasingly sectarian U.S.-installed government.
…like Major General John Batiste. And Lieutenant General Gregory Newbold, Major General Paul Eaton, and General Anthony Zinni. The way to do so has been obvious for some time now.
It really should go without saying, but I guess it really needs to be said. The US hasn’t used a nuclear weapon against another country since they were called “atomic bombs“, and there’s good reason for that. We’ve used other really scary weapons, but The Bomb always seemed just a bit too ridiculously deadly to justify. Until now.
So let me say it: Don’t nuke Iran. Hopefully it’s a statement that Congress can agree with enough to take a stand.
