Anger!
The past few days it's seemed like the Intarweb has been trying especially hard to make me angry. I was able to ignore most of the disturbing reports up to now, but this one has me hoppin' mad:
The nation's new education secretary denounced PBS on Tuesday for spending public money on a cartoon with lesbian characters, saying many parents would not want children exposed to such lifestyles.
...The episode features two lesbian couples, although the focus is on farm life and maple sugaring.
It's hard to describe my seething anger over this particular issue. It reminds me of how racist parents wouldn't let their children watch Sesame Street because it showed white and "colored" children playing together happily. How dare lesbians make sugar in Vermont! Decent people shouldn't have to watch that!
Grrrr...

I posted the following comment to PBS television. In case the link doesn't work, the URL is http://www.pbs.org/aboutsite/aboutsite_emailform.html
I just wanted to express my displeasure at PBS's decision to pull the Sugartime! episode of Postcards from Buster. The same-sex relationships depicted in the episode are legal and normal in Vermont and elsewhere, and many children will see similar relationships in their daily lives, if not their own homes. Would you be afraid of exposing children to "sensitive" issues of mixed race parents? I am very disappointed in what I perceive to be PBS's hypocrisy and cowardice.
Sincerely,
Deana Weibel

I heard about this on NPR the other day. PBS claims they pulled it because the lesbian couples (there were two) were not "explained" or "put in context" and so they were raising issues that they weren't exploring fully. Hmph. The PBS spokesperson mentioned that one of the episodes of this show has the bunny visiting an American Muslim family, but it's all contextualized. I was really growling at my radio. The banned episode wasn't even about sexual orientation and I suspect the "two moms" thing wouldn't have even registered for most kids. I was wondering myself if there would have been the same brouhaha about a mixed race couple. Damn.
