Definitely an intentional community idea, certainly. But it doesn’t need to be only that–look at Flexcar and such. There is a certain amount of trust involved (aren’t those people just going to steal/break my stuff, will I be able to use my stuff when I want it), which goes back to the success of such ideas in intentional or religious communities, where the very idea of living there is an exercise in trust. Then again, trust is good. And letting go of that very grabby “mine” impulse is good too–it’s okay if I don’t have something right now, it’s okay to share, sharing is good, once in a while something gets lost, move on. These are difficult ideas. We start learning them when we’re 2 and 3 and they still don’t stick without practice.

Damnit Chris, stop giving me ideas on things that I now have to build. I can imagine a website even for a small location or neighborhood or whatever, even without the 3rd place (although, admittedly it would be better if there were a 3rd place for it).

Sounds like the Hutterites or kibbutzes – and small scale stuff of this kind seems to work well.
